You might be wondering why the title says “Lights Out Edition”, basically, during the second week, some teams are already ready to start animating their work and in order to help the animation process be smooth, such as animating videos without shadows for some teams, lights are out! So the teams have to work in the dark. It can get kind of depressing if you stay in there too long… That’s how I felt for 3 hours…
Okay, back to the topic, let’s see what our Top 10 Teams have been going through since the last time we saw them!
“After the first week, we got tired of the food they serve here, and we’ve been munching a lot on snacks, it can get tiring to draw as well! We even extended our lunch to 90 minutes…”
“We’ve been busier than the previous week, we’re still working on the same thing though, character cutting and our background is finally done!”
“It’s been a tiring journey so far, we’re currently having our trials for animating and we have another trial run tomorrow.”
“We are much more settled down now compared to the previous week, getting used to such environment and workplace!”
“We skipped a lot of meals for this competition to work on our animation video, this is how dedicated we are! We’re currently touching up on our characters to make it look as great as it can be!”
“We’re back on track, we even came back on the weekend to work on our animation video cause we feel that we can do better by putting in extra effort to meet our expectations!”
“We’re improving and we’re almost done with rotoscoping too, we’re also done with outlining and that leaves us with shading to do.”
As I mentioned before in my first review, team EATYOUUP was not around, so I got a chance to interview them and asked them a few questions!
Q: How does it feel getting into the Top 10?
A: “We feel excited because we didn’t expect us to get into the Top 10, furthermore we’re new to animation.”
Q: Based on the amount of effort put in, do you girls think you can win?
A: “We’ll try our best and most probably we’ll win!”
Q: How has the journey been so far?
A: “We’ve been doing a lot of drawings, it gets kind of tedious but we’ll hang on. Most probably this week we’ll be animating, we just had a shot at it and now we’re checking and editting it.”
Q: What difficulties have you encountered so far?
A: “Water colour is a difficult for us, the paint, trying to control the water, water patches and having to redo it again to make it perfect but we feel that by the time we start animating, things would be better for us.”
I didn’t ask a few teams cause they were busy and rushing for time so I tried not to ask too many questions this week cause they all seemed rather busy cause this week is their last week!
If you’ve been to the animation site, you would see the instructors from Animagine there to help out the students, these people are the ones who give the students the advice, the tips, answer their question, help them with any difficulties they meet and most importantly guide them along, giving them instructions and directions cause we students can get a little “blur” at some point in time!

By the 2nd week, you could really see the bond between the teams strengthened to much greater heights, they’re all so friendly to each other, great sportsmanship we have here! Despite the lights being switched off and the aircon down, these youthful batch of students still persist and work their way through the dim-light environment! They even created the game called “Toilet Game” to entertain themselves if they feel bored. (When you’re going to spend 3 weeks there, you have to find something to entertain you or you might just go bonkers…)
