Momento Mori: The Great Bunburry

Here’s a little story from the one-week selection period in the September holidays.

So, it just so happened that our beloved leader, Char, was overseas in china for the first few days. Our main concern was that we’d be totally lost without her (plus if we didn’t get through, she’d have nothing to do when she got back), and also that they wouldn’t let her be in the group if she missed out the first few days. Thus came our very elaborate backstory/excuse.

Char had gone to China because “her relative Bunburry Lee requested her immediate presence”, and Bunburry was “quite sickly”.

Now, if any of you are familiar with Oscar Wilde’s play, The Importance Of Being Earnest, you’d understand the reference. If you aren’t, then you’ll just have to trust me when I say it’s a very funny reference to possibly one of the funniest, and therefore best, plays that has ever been produced.

It’s something of an inside joke, so it’s okay if you don’t think it’s funny.

And don’t worry if you don’t get it. We tried to tell the whole backstory to the judges during one of the pitching and they just looked at us as if we were mad or delusional or both.

There you have it, the great Bunburry!

Stay tuned for more!
