I am really honoured to be one of the judges for this year’s N.E.mation!8. As I’m based in Los Angeles, I hope this short letter is able to express how I feel about the top 10 entries since I can’t meet you all personally.
I have to say I’m really impressed with the amount of creativity in them and the overall standard of the clips. I like how songs and lyrics were used to bring out the message; the way the videos were art directed to convey an intended mood and how animation was deployed to strengthen the overall concept. Each clip has its own unique style and it was pure joy just to watch them over and over. I almost felt that I discovered something new whenever I watch them again and it took me quite a while just to settle on a final score for each entry. Fantastic job everyone!
This year’s theme “Because You Played a Part” is something I can relate to. I see myself as a homegrown artist where I was first exposed to computer graphics from the Film Sound & Video course at Ngee Ann Polytechnic back in 1995. I first started my career in the CG industry as an Animator and have gradually moved into Lighting and Compositing. For over a decade, I was working in the local CG industry until I moved to Los Angeles about 2 years ago to work for Walt Disney Animation Studios. So far, I have worked on animated features such as “Wreck-It Ralph” and most recently on “Frozen”. As you can see, I have received my education and learned all my craft in Singapore. I’m happy that this judging opportunity allows me to play my tiny part in contributing to the nurturing of the new generation of artists for the country.
You may not have realized, you have also done your part by inspiring everyone with your creativity. Creativity is like a muscle where you have to keep exercising it to make it better. No idea is perfect but it only gets better when you start working on it. I’m really glad you took the first step to realize your concept because not many people has the courage and discipline to do it. I hope that you can continue to work on this creativity in you. Even if you don’t become an Animator or CG Artist in future, creativity is still going to be invaluable in every career.
With this, I thank the organizers for this meaningful opportunity and I hope to see the winning team in the US soon!
